After leaving Electric Coin Company (ECC), the developers behind Zcash
announced that they are already creating a new wallet for the cryptocurrency.
Former ECC CEO Josh Swihart explained that the same group that worked on the Zashi wallet will continue using its foundation to build the next version.
He said on January 8, “The team from the Electric Coin Company that launched Zcash and created the Zashi wallet is now launching a new wallet for Zcash, using the same Zashi codebase we built”.

The upcoming wallet, currently called cashZ, is expected to arrive in the next few weeks. According to Swihart, people using the Zashi wallet can easily move to cashZ with minimal setup.
Swihart also reassured Zcash users that their focus has not changed. He said:
The entire team that worked at Electric Coin Company and built Zashi is still 100% focused on full-stack Zcash development.
He added that they are not starting a new coin but rather continuing to improve the existing network.
On the group’s new website, Swihart shared more about why they decided to form a separate company. The first reason was Zcash’s identity. He said, “Zcash is cypherpunk, and we need an organization built around that understanding”.
He also mentioned that privacy should be treated as a normal part of financial systems, much as physical cash is. Swihart added that Zcash has grown in recent years and can no longer operate as a small project.
